Let’s face it, we are all guilty of spending way too much time on our phones. What used to be an innocent extra game of snake on the classic Nokia has evolved into another world entirely, where we live a virtual life that sucks us out of our real ones.

Yes, social media is an epic tool that can be used to connect with people across the world but it also stops us from connecting with those right in front of us. How many meals have been interrupted by the old ‘let me take a picture first’ - we all know no one really cares what your dinner looked like last night yet we feel compelled to share none the less. We have become tethered to technology and it is diminishing our sense of reality.

The evolution of the internet has completely altered our world, access is infinite and so is the level of influence that goes with it. We are in a constant state of distraction, slipping between online and offline - so what’s the cure?

We can’t ignore that social media has been a god sent over the past year and no matter the negatives, being able to see what our friends are doing in London or New York, we can’t deny, is a real comfort. Times are weird and naturally, we want to feel linked somehow and that is OK. What is not, is when connection is actually the opposite of what is being provided. When we are wading through the lives of strangers, obsessing over things that don’t really exist, it is simply too much information. We don’t need it.

What we do need is simple, to get clean. Just like our wardrobes, sometimes our social media needs a little sorting. Be honest with yourself and think about what you want to feed your mind with on a daily basis, culling is healthy - a celery juice for the mind if you will.

Follow people you know, concepts or ideas you can relate to, no need to know what Kimmy K is doing 24/7 (trust us). Cut down on screen time, make a conscious effort to leave your phone at home sometimes, a blissful beach walk doesn’t require an iPhone. Give your friends and family your time and attention, there is nothing worse than looking at the top of someone’s head whilst trying to have a conversation, we are better than that. We don’t need to give so much power to the online, the real world is where it is at.
